Travels in España

There are few times in life where you feel like you’re 100% in the right place, at the right time… and being in Spain right now would be one of those. Even as one of the oldest students here, I feel like I’m 16 years old all over again. I also just realized that the daughter of a Tchadian physician (Dr. Gardner) is here!

Just in the first week, the country has absolutely stolen my heart. Classes are fun and frustrating since everything’s in spanish, and we were victims of a legit rain and hail storm, in which I had to run from class back to the dorm— just in time to move my laptop from under the open window! Everyone here is incredibly nice and chill (hopefully I don’t pick up on all the swearing though lol).

I’m also taking a Flamenco class! What is flamenco??? It’s that awesome traditional spanish dancing with the twirly skirts and a big flower in your hair-type-of-gig! (Enrique Iglesias’ ‘Bailando’ music video is a good example). It’s crazy to believe that an Adventist school has a class that teaches such… sensuality :P but it’s so fun and our dance teacher is amazing! (We also get to have our own twirling skirts). I’m also learning how to cat-daddy, dougie, do the nae-nae, and other moves from the black friends i’ve made here lol, they’re probably almost half the fun, honestly.

We went camping this past weekend in the country-side, which was a great bonding opportunity with each other and the locals. We played all sorts of games, including capture the flag at night with team-colored glow bracelets. Then this morning in the freezing cold, we went kayaking, banana-tubing, and cliff-jumping in the beautiful blue camp-side lake.

As I reflect back on my life, I realize how much I cheated myself of life’s simple and blessed pleasures. As a result, I have many regrets… But I was talking to Hannah earlier, opening up to her about some of those regrets and such, and that’s when I realized that in so so many ways, I feel like being here in Spain is my 2nd chance. A second chance to build greater memories.

Q&A [via @icdanci]

1) What colour underwear are you wearing?

red and white

2) Why do you do what you do?

Well, I’m traveling right now and I do it because I’m absolutely fascinated by other cultures. Since I was very little, I remember my mom always taking me and my brother around, visiting various places/countries; so perhaps I got the “bug” from that :P But I also believe it’s such a valuable investment because it’s essentially knowledge and education, is it not? Not only are you witnessing a different perspective on life and culture, but I think it opens your eyes to the “bigger picture” of the world and issues that address humanity on a whole.

3) Who was the last person you kissed?

The cutest little baby at our church! I hope I can have a daughter just like her.

4)  When was the last time you felt loved?

It may sound cliche, but i feel extremely loved right now from my mom. She’s the one I’m traveling with right now, and even though the way we travel is sometimes conflicting, I can sense her love when I notice that she hears my passing comments/wishes, and she tries to fulfill them secretly for me. She also sometimes lets me visit somewhere that’s not on the itinerary, and it actually feels really maternal when she holds my hand when she thinks i’m sleeping (because i won’t let her hold my hand usually LOL).

5) Where is home for you?

Georgia. The good ‘ol south, land flowing with sweet tea and butter.

6) How do you wake up in the morning?

Depends. But waking up is a miracle everyday because of how painful it is for me -_- lol. but i usually wake up on my right side? And I always try to gently bring myself out of bed. The struggle is real. I hate it.

7) Where do you want to visit?

Paris and Southern France, Deep country of Tuscany, Japan, & India.

8) When was the last time you had no idea what you were doing?

I honestly can’t think of a time… OH YES. My little sister was asking me for something that’s a designer brand— the product wasn’t itself that expensive, but it certainly was way too much for a girl her age. And for the first time, I really felt like a conflicted parent that wants to give gifts to his/her child, but doesn’t want the gift to do more harm than good… but amidst this inner-battle of whether i should buy this thing for her, I eventually just bought it because gift-giving is my #1 love language to give to others… and I really had no idea what i was doing and made the impulsive purchase online.. of course, couple days later i realized i wasn’t being a good older sister/example, so I discussed it with her and then returned it.

9) Who do you see when you look in the mirror?

In the mornings, I only see blemishes. Afternoons, I sometimes like who i see, other times i don’t. Evenings, I see someone who made it through another day.

10) Why do you live where you do?

Cause that’s where my parents are and most of my childhood friends.

11) What is your biggest pet peeve?

Fasten your seat belt… hahaha jk
omg biggest?! I feel like they’re all the top lol.. ok, the biggest pet peeve i have— that I don’t think many people know— is small talk. I find it trivial and pretentious (unless the person is genuinely wanting to get to know you). It’s more the conversations (usually with an acquaintance or stranger) where the person keeps asking “fluffy” questions because they clearly feel uncomfortable with silence or feel obliged to make conversation.

5hawn! Do the Q&A lol
