'David Gandy's Goodnight' for Bionda Castana Autumn/Winter 2013, directed by Benjamin Cox
We are deeply saddened to learn that TEDxMidAtlantic speaker Sam Berns passed away Saturday night at age 17. Sam had progeria, a rare rapid aging disease that affects approximately one out of four to eight million children.
Above, moments from Sam’s TEDxMidAtlantic talk, in which he shares his advice for living happily, no matter the challenges. Sam’s talk displays his great courage, infectious positivity, and wisdom beyond his years. He will be missed.
Put my son to sleep in his new onesie, woke up to a bear raiding my drawers.
There are few times in life where you feel like you’re 100% in the right place, at the right time… and being in Spain right now would be one of those. Even as one of the oldest students here, I feel like I’m 16 years old all over again. I also just realized that the daughter of a Tchadian physician (Dr. Gardner) is here!
Just in the first week, the country has absolutely stolen my heart. Classes are fun and frustrating since everything’s in spanish, and we were victims of a legit rain and hail storm, in which I had to run from class back to the dorm— just in time to move my laptop from under the open window! Everyone here is incredibly nice and chill (hopefully I don’t pick up on all the swearing though lol).
I’m also taking a Flamenco class! What is flamenco??? It’s that awesome traditional spanish dancing with the twirly skirts and a big flower in your hair-type-of-gig! (Enrique Iglesias’ ‘Bailando’ music video is a good example). It’s crazy to believe that an Adventist school has a class that teaches such… sensuality :P but it’s so fun and our dance teacher is amazing! (We also get to have our own twirling skirts). I’m also learning how to cat-daddy, dougie, do the nae-nae, and other moves from the black friends i’ve made here lol, they’re probably almost half the fun, honestly.
We went camping this past weekend in the country-side, which was a great bonding opportunity with each other and the locals. We played all sorts of games, including capture the flag at night with team-colored glow bracelets. Then this morning in the freezing cold, we went kayaking, banana-tubing, and cliff-jumping in the beautiful blue camp-side lake.
As I reflect back on my life, I realize how much I cheated myself of life’s simple and blessed pleasures. As a result, I have many regrets… But I was talking to Hannah earlier, opening up to her about some of those regrets and such, and that’s when I realized that in so so many ways, I feel like being here in Spain is my 2nd chance. A second chance to build greater memories.
